Descript AI Credits: Check This Before You Upgrade

Descript is an AI audio and video editor that lets you edit media by editing the transcript. Delete a sentence from the text, and the matching audio or video goes with it. That makes it especially useful for interviews, podcasts and talking-head content.

But when your AI credits start disappearing, the first instinct is usually: Do I need a bigger plan?

Maybe not. The problem may be how you are using the AI, not how many credits you have.

The expensive mistake may be the route, not the plan

Descript’s AI agent, Underlord, can take a broad instruction like “clean this up” and decide what to do next. Convenient, but Descript says Underlord uses credits for its reasoning and the tools it runs. Even the conversation can consume credits. See the Underlord guide.

If you already know the job, you can skip that decision layer and use the direct tool instead:

Need cleaner speech? Use Studio Sound.
Need filler words removed? Use Remove Filler Words.

Know the task? Use the tool. Need help deciding? Use the agent.

Direct tools still use AI credits. We have not measured how much any individual user would save. The point is simpler: paying AI to decide and paying AI to execute are not the same workflow.

Run the 240-credit check before you upgrade

Descript documents a 30-credit maximum per file, per application for direct Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words. See the credit rules.

So four files, using both tools once each, gives:

4 files × 2 tools × up to 30 credits = up to 240 AI credits.

That is a calculation from Descript’s published ceiling, not a measured bill. But it gives you something better than guessing: a small workflow you can test before buying more capacity.

The Hobbyist trap

Hobbyist is Descript’s lower paid plan and includes 400 AI credits per month. The less obvious part is that Hobbyist cannot buy AI-credit top-ups. Top-ups are available only on Creator and Business. Check top-up eligibility.

That means “I’ll stay on the cheaper plan and just buy extra credits during a deadline” is not an option on Hobbyist. Light months may be fine. A sudden burst of work is where the plan becomes less flexible.

AI Bibimbap verdict

Do not upgrade just because your Descript AI credits are running low.

First ask: if I run the work I already understand directly, am I still running out of credits?

Open Settings → choose your drive → Usage, check what is actually consuming credits, and run one normal edit without Underlord where the task is already obvious. If you still hit the ceiling, then the upgrade is solving a real capacity problem.
