Claude Ultra vs Max vs Pro (2026): Is $200 Worth It?

Claude Ultra costs $200 a month, but it is not unlimited. So what exactly do you get for ten times the price of Pro?

Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Max and Max 20x to Ultra on October 30, 2026. The prices stayed the same. The big change is that verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour usage limit, although a weekly limit still applies.

If you’re deciding whether to upgrade, here’s what matters: the real usage differences, the $200 API-credit catch, and which plan actually fits your work.

Quick verdict: Pro suits most people. Max is the sensible upgrade when Pro regularly interrupts your work. Ultra is worth considering when you repeatedly hit Max’s limits or need long, uninterrupted sessions.

1. The Biggest Change: Ultra Isn’t Unlimited

Previously, Max 20x offered a larger five-hour session allowance. The new Ultra plan eliminates that session cap for verified accounts. That matters when you’re writing, researching or running demanding Claude Code workflows for hours at a time.

However, Ultra still has a weekly usage cap of 10× Pro’s allowance. You can reach it with heavy usage, especially long conversations, large files or complex coding tasks. Once you do, you may need to wait for a reset or pay for extra usage.

Important: The old “20x” name and new “10x weekly” description refer to different measurement windows. They cannot be compared directly to claim that your total allowance was cut in half.

New Ultra accounts also might not lose the five-hour limit immediately: verification is automatic and can take time. Check your actual usage status in Settings → Usage before expecting unrestricted sessions.

2. The $200 API Credit Catch

Ultra includes $200 per month in Claude Platform API credits, versus $100 on Max. It sounds like the plan pays for itself, but these are not cash refunds or subscription discounts.

The credits are for eligible uses such as API calls, Claude Console Playground and supported Agent SDK workloads through a linked Console organization. They cannot pay for ordinary interactive Claude Code sessions or extra Claude chat and Cowork usage.

  • You must claim them: Link an eligible Claude Console organization; new subscribers can claim after seven days on an eligible plan.
  • They expire: Unused credits do not roll over to the next billing cycle.
  • They don’t raise your plan limit: Subscription usage and Claude Platform API usage are billed separately.

If you build apps with the Claude API, the credits can be valuable. If you only use Claude chat and interactive Claude Code, don’t count the $200 allowance as money saved. Check Anthropic’s official API-credit rules before upgrading.

3. Which Claude Plan Is Actually Worth It?

Pro ($20/month): Best for everyday use

Choose Pro for writing, research, documents and occasional coding. It includes Claude Code and most of what a typical individual needs. Upgrade only if the included limits regularly get in your way.

Max ($100/month): Best for frequent power users

Max offers five times Pro’s five-hour and weekly usage. It’s the practical middle ground for people who code, research or work with Claude throughout the day but don’t need Ultra’s continuous-session flexibility.

Ultra ($200/month): Best for sustained, heavy work

Ultra offers twice Max’s published weekly usage multiplier and, once verified, removes the five-hour session limit. It is most compelling when Max repeatedly stops important work. A larger allowance does not automatically make the same AI model produce better answers.

4. Three Checks Before You Upgrade

  1. Which limit are you hitting? Look at Settings → Usage. A five-hour cap and a weekly cap are different problems.
  2. How often does work stop? If this happens only occasionally, paying for extra usage when needed may cost less than moving up permanently.
  3. Will you use the API credits? If you don’t run eligible Claude Platform workloads, disregard that perk when comparing prices.

Also check where Claude Code is authenticated. Using a separate Console API key can result in API billing rather than consumption of your subscription allowance. FAQ: Claude Ultra, Max and Pro

Is Claude Ultra really unlimited?

No. Verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour usage limit, but weekly limits and other restrictions remain.

What happened to Claude Max 20x?

It became Claude Ultra. Existing Max 20x subscribers were moved to Ultra at the same $200 monthly price.

Does Ultra include Claude Code?

Yes. All three paid plans include Claude Code; what changes is your included usage allowance and applicable limits.

Can I use Ultra’s API credits for extra Claude Code sessions?

Not for ordinary interactive sessions or paid extra usage in Claude apps. Eligible API-billed Agent SDK workflows are a separate case.

Final Verdict: Pay for Capacity You Actually Need

Our recommendation: Start with Pro. Move to Max only when you consistently hit Pro’s limits. Choose Ultra when Max’s limits genuinely disrupt valuable work.

The $200 plan offers more weekly capacity and greater freedom from session interruptions. But it’s not unlimited, and its monthly API credits aren’t interchangeable with extra Claude usage. Don’t pay premium prices for capacity you’ll never use.
